Borrowing
Library Cards
Any resident of Lewiston is eligible for a free library card. Applicants must present identification, and proof of residence. A library card is required to borrow library items, and to use the library’s computers.
Temporary cards, and computer guest passes may be issued for those visiting the area. Identification is required.
Apply for your free library card online, or at one of the library’s help desks.
A $1 fee is charged for a replacement card; no fee is charged to replace a card that is worn out due to extended use.
Please notify the library if your card is lost or stolen, or if your name or address changes.
Checking Out
Please present your own library card to check out material. You are responsible for all materials checked out on your card.
- Audiobooks are loaned for 14 days
- Magazines and periodicals are loaned for 14 days
- DVDs and videos are loaned for 7 days
- Books and most other materials are loaned for 28 days
- Reference and genealogy materials, newspapers,
and some magazines are designated for use in the library and may not be
checked out
- Interlibrary loan material will be circulated for the period indicated by the owning library
Renewals
You may renew materials by bringing your library card or items to the
library or by phone. To request a renewal by phone, call 208.798.2525;
please have your library card ready. To extend your renewal date online
you need to do it by the due date; the system does not accept
renewals on overdue items.
Holds
If the material you need is already checked out or at another location, the item can be placed on Hold. You may place a hold online using the VALNet library catalog, or phone the library and a staff member will be happy to place the hold for you.
Once your hold is available, you will be notified. If your email address is in the system, an email will be sent. Otherwise, library staff will call to advise your hold is available for pick-up.
You are able to check the status of your hold request, cancel your request,
or check the general status of your account through My Account on VALNet.
VALNet Library Catalog
The Valley Automated Library Network, or VALNet, is a consortium of public and school libraries in the Southeastern Washington and North Central Idaho region that share their resources, information and online catalog. The VALNet library catalog expands your choices by providing materials from other libraries within the consortium, and materials can be returned to any VALNet library.
Interlibrary Loans
If the Lewiston City Library or VALNet does not own a copy of
material you need, we may be able to borrow it from another library for
you. Ask the library staff for further information.
Fines and Charges
You are responsible for returning items checked out on your library card
by the due date. A fine is charged for each day an item is overdue. The
overdue fine is $0.15 per item per day.
You will be blocked from checking out additional materials if you have
accumulated 3 or more overdue items and/or $5 or more in fines or
charges. Overdue items will also prevent you from ordering or renewing
items online.
Fines will be charged to patron account for materials that are lost, damaged or returned incomplete.
