On February 8th, the Lewiston City Library was awarded a Science Education Grant from the Idaho Department of Education for the amount of $6,525 to hold a series of four “Six Pack S.T.E.M. Week” programs, starting this spring break. With the addition of five laptops donated by the Avista Foundation through the Lewiston Library Foundation and with support from the Friends of the Lewiston City Library, this grant will fund a mobile laptop lab and a selection of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) kits that will allow us to provide sustainable STEM programming for our community.
Six Pack S.T.E.M. Week is a six-day STEM program introducing kids to the fundamentals of technology and computer science. For one hour each day, students will take a journey through the STEM concepts and structures associated with computers and computer use in our everyday lives. Participants will learn the basics of code through Braille and Morse code, observe how electricity works and its role in binary code, build their own circuits and telegraph machines, identify the guts of a computer, and design their own computer algorithms. They will also be introduced to associated STEM jobs and career paths, with a focus on those available in our local community. We will be conducting four of these programs with ten students per program with ages ranging from 8-13. The design of this program is intended to be mobile, allowing us to take the program to families instead of forcing families to come to the library and also providing more flexibility for adhering to COVID safety guidelines. We will be utilizing the parks located around Lewiston by holding three of the four programs at different parks. One program will be held during spring break (March 29 - April 3) in the Library’s Event Space, with the other three taking place during the Summer Reading Program.
- Week 1: March 29 - April 3 (Spring Break)
- Week 2: June 14 - 19
- Week 3: July 12 - 17
- Week 4: July 26 - 31
Due to a limited number of devices and kits, registration is required. Registration will open on Eventbrite approximately 3 weeks prior to the start of each STEM week.
