Libguides: Action Movies

A time clapper with an explosive symbol

Libraries are quiet, but movies can be as loud as they want.

Written by Carolyn DeBerard, Lead Library Assistant

There’s nothing quite like the screeching-tire sounds of an epic car chase, the “PEW-PEW-PEW!” of a good guys vs. bad guys battle royale, or the sheer teeth-rattling magnitude of a good, old-fashioned building explosion.  The action genre has given us some of the best movies ever made, and your Lewiston Library has a plethora of flicks to choose from this summer if you feel the need to sit back, have some snacks, and relax to some high-stakes, fast-paced storytelling.

Die Hard - A classic!  Bruce Willis, Alan Rickman, a cop getting involved in a terrorist attack on LA, scrappy fight scenes, what more could a viewer ask for?

Now You See Me - A team of magicians pulling off all sorts of robberies and bank heists.  Yes, magicians.  Just watch it, you’ll be glad you did!

American Sicario - The true-life story of the first American-born drug-lord in Mexico, and his ultimate downfall.  If you’re a fan of cartel stories and seedy underbellies, this should be right up your alley.

Birds of Prey - We can’t have a list of action movies without at least one comic book film!  This one follows Harley Quinn out on her own, getting chased around by an impressive bunch of baddies who think she’s easy pickings after her break-up with the Joker.  Boy, they REALLY must not know her very well…

Easy Rider - This buddy-biker movie starring Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper is considered a “landmark road film” of the late 1960s.  Full of outlaws and ne'er-do-wells, it’s a different sort of action movie than others on this list, but a classic just the same.

Terminator - No action movie list would be complete without mentioning this one!  Cyborg assassins from the year 2029 (which, let’s face it, isn’t that far away), a great big apocalypse due to the AI system Skynet, and Schwarzenegger’s amazing one-liners.  Yes, please!

These are just a tiny sample of the action films the Lewiston Library has to offer.  When you’re sunburned and tired from a long day of summer fun, turn down the lights, blast the air conditioner, grab some snacks to munch, and settle in for your favorite on-screen thrill ride!
