Movies set in ID and WA

A map of Idaho and Washington that has movie posters over the states, including Deer Hunter and Mass

What's your favorite PNW-based film?

By Carolyn DeBerard

It’s always fun to be watching a movie and realize “Hey! I know that place!” or “OMG, I’ve been there before!”. Even better, “I live near there!”. There have been loads of movies both set in or filmed in our lovely Idaho and Washington areas, and the Lewiston Library is happy to offer a few selections to remind you that there’s no place like home:

Alpha and Omega - This pawsome animated adventure tells the story of Kate and Humphrey, two Rocky Mountain wolves that fall for each other but are in different packs. They get relocated to Idaho for repopulation and must find a way home before war erupts between the Eastern pack and the Western pack. A little bit Romeo and Juliet and a lot of action, this film is great for the whole family.

Mass - Filmed over 2 weeks at an Episcopal church in Hailey, ID, Mass tells the story of two sets of grieving individuals: the parents of Evan, the victim of a high school shooting, and the parents of Hayden, the shooter. Six years after the incident the couples meet to discuss their sons, what ultimately may have led to the horrible events of that day, and how or if there can be space to move on after such tragedy.

How to Marry a Millionaire - This classic 1953 comedy starring the triple threat of Marilyn Monroe, Lauren Bacall, and Betty Grable is all about three Manhattan models trying to nab themselves wealthy suitors. Shenanigans ensue when they find out the men they’ve fallen for are not exactly rolling in dough. Though most of the film was shot in New York, several scenes were filmed in Sun Valley, ID, supposedly a favorite location of Marilyn’s.

Twilight - Probably one of the most famous franchises ever, Stephanie Meyer’s vampire saga brought immediate fame to the small town of Forks, WA, on the Olympic Peninsula. Teenager Bella Swan moves in with her father and tries to navigate life while reconnecting with her childhood friend/werewolf Jacob, and falling hard for Edward: the brooding-yet-handsome vampire who tries to protect her from the evils of his kind.

Practical Magic - This hugely popular cult classic that centers on two witch sisters and the power of family to defeat an evil spirit may have been set in Massachusetts, but was partly filmed in Coupeville, WA, and on San Juan Island in WA. The sisters' now-famous house was specifically built on the island for the movie, then torn down immediately after filming.

The Deer Hunter - This Robert DeNiro classic war drama was mostly filmed in Ohio. However, the actual deer hunting scenes were shot in the Mount Baker/ Snoqualmie National Forest area, and at Nooksack Falls in the North Cascades range in WA State.
